Foolish for Christ: Part 2

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.”

We’ll never know for sure if JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is a spiritual allegory, but I can’t help but find inspiration in the tale of Frodo! A hobbit, tiny in stature but large in heart, saved Middle Earth and conquered evil with sheer determination and the desire to do what was right and good. He wasn’t the strongest, the wisest, or the best looking - he was just a little guy who wanted to keep the dark from overtaking the light.

Whether he meant to or not, Tolkien’s Frodo character followed a godly principle found in the last part of I Corinthians 1 - God often uses the simple and small things of our world to accomplish His great and glorious purposes.

Take a look at the NIV version of that passage:
“For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: 'Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.'"
(1 Corinthians 1:25-31, NIV)

That’s the best kind of news for someone like me - a little vertically challenged, a little on the shy side. Yes, God can use even me!

When we obediently follow His leading and open our hearts to the power of His Holy Spirit, He can turn our shortcomings into strengths, our inadequacies into forces for His good. Despite our imperfections, we still can bring Him glory. Just think of some of those Bible heroes – Joseph, Moses, David, Rahab, Gideon, and even Peter. All flawed but faithful, all demonstrating God’s power made perfect in weakness!

When you look at it that way, it’s not so bad to be foolish for Christ!

See you all this weekend!
